London’s newest attraction opened this week to a fanfare of disappointment and derision. The Sky gardens at Fenchurch Street have been heralded as a unique public space with exquisitely landscaped gardens available for all to enjoy. With uninterrupted 360degree views over London they promised to offer a view from the heavens and it was this anticipation and excitement which helped pass scrutiny of city planners who made an exception to the imposing building given that it promised much needed green, garden space for free to Londoners.

Once opened, this has been seen to be something of an exaggeration however. Perhaps the designer had his head in the clouds too long or maybe the landscapers ran out of grass and imagination as the result seems more like an overgrown planter than a garden as there does not seem to be anywhere to enjoy an impromptu picnic or throw a ball around for your dog. However given that the ‘garden’ itself is indoors and dogs are banned anyway this is unlikely to be a place where you pop to during your lunch hour, indeed you cannot pop anywhere near it as it requires a booking in advance to enter and a time slot of 90 minutes!

Perhaps the designer and architect were prone to exaggeration or perhaps they were downright fibbers as the result is certainly not what the hype promised. The dining though does seem to be of a superior quality with the London caterers Rhubarb providing the fine dining experience. They bill themselves as ‘food designers’ so whilst the food looks amazing, don’t expect to leave with a full stomach. It might be wise to locate the nearest KFC and grab a bargain bucket on the way home.
